The Warren County Board of Education voted 4-1 on March 16 to ban the use of tobacco "by students, employees or those on school grounds or during extracurricular school activities" as of July 1, Charles Mason reports for the Bowling Green
.
"Board Chairman Kerry Young dissented," Mason reports. "He said he wanted the district to establish designated smoking areas. Young said tobacco is legal for adults, and is a traditional cash crop for Kentuckians."
However, "Board Member Don Basham said it was in the best interest of the district to promote a tobacco-free environment," and the other three members agreed.
About 40 of Kentucky's school districts have banned tobacco. "Warren will join Simpson County as the only two school districts in south-central Kentucky deemed 100 percent tobacco-free under state guidelines, Mason
reports.
